Sims – “LMG”

This song is the third single off of Sims’ latest album Bad Time Zoo and was arguably one of my favorites. This music video is very fun and animated, it’s hard to turn your head away from it.

Here’s some info on the video and why they chose the route they did with this one:
“Doomtree’s SIMS “LMG” video exclusively premieres on Consequence of Sound today. The third single off of Bad Time Zoo, released earlier this year, showcases SIMS in a new way, animated. SIMS explains how the video came to be by saying, “I usually have decent ideas when it comes to conceptualizing music videos, but this one was a challenge. The song itself is borderline cheesy as is, which is why Beak and I love it. We knew the video couldn’t be too cutsie and could absolutely not take place in a bar. After those parameters, we were out of ideas so we enlisted the services of Matt Scharenbroich, a really talented visual artist and the drummer in Beak’s old band TPC.

Created in director Scharenbroich’s studio over the course of an icy winter in Minneapolis the “LMG” video is the end result of more than 1600 individual drawings, 400 cups of coffee, 60 markers and two ecstatic hands. The video was made using a technique called rotoscoping, which is “the tracing of live-action film frames in order to capture a more realistic movement. It has an immediate kinetic energy that results from the inevitable variation of the tactile mediums used throughout. Markers smear and fade, graphite scratches into the page, and ephemeral, singular ideas punctuate single frames in the rhythm of the process.” Sounds simple right?

The video highlights the contrast between the confessional, dark narrative of the verses and the overjoyed, positive message of the chorus. The diaristic song felt sincere and energetic, and rotoscoping “captures SIMS’ performance and catapult it into another more joyful sphere where fingers transformed into bottle rockets and fireworks emerged from palms.”

Soundset 2011 – Who’s excited?

Rhymesayers Entertainment and Rose Presents bring you the fourth annual Soundset Festival:  the official Midwest kick-off of the summer with nine hours of the best independent Hip Hop music in one day. It all goes down at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN (rain or shine).

Confirmed artists for Soundset 2011 include: Atmosphere, Big Boi, De La Soul, Slaughterhouse (Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Royce da 5’9”, Crooked I), Brother Ali, Doomtree (P.O.S, Dessa, Sims, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Lazerbeak, Papertiger), Evidence x Rakaa-Iriscience x DJ Babu, Mac Miller, Curren$y, Blueprint, Grieves & Budo, Zion I & The Grouch, Sab The Artist, DJ Abilities, Face Candy, Edan with special guest Paten Locke, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Looptroop Rockers, Rubberoom, Soulcrate Music, 2Mex, Mr. Gene Poole, Qwazaar, Longshot, Mally, Desdamona, Duenday, Midwest Konnect, Rocky Diamonds, Stage One, Shortkut, Noam The Drummer, Exile, Maseo, Skeme Richards, Kid Cut Up and Espada. Hosted by Toki Wright, Carnage and Kevin Beacham.

If you follow the indie hip-hop scene whatsoever, you have either heard of, or been to Soundset. It is one of the largest one day hip-hop festivals across the nation and has seen massive success in the previous years. Most of you reading this probably already know who’s performing and have bought your tickets. One way that Soundset has grown so popular is with the vast amount of acts from industry pro’s and the lesser-known local acts. It grows every year, and last year it exploded. Reason being, is besides the great music, custom car show, DJ tent, B-Boy/B-Girl competition, and live art exhibits, is it was heavily promoted through the use of mobile marketing. Fans had a chance to win prizes, meet and greets and other fun things via text message. The advertisers at Soundset also sent out mobile alerts when artists were signing autographs, or hitting the stage. This year they have the same plan up their sleeves. Personally, I feel this is a fantastic idea. If you’ve ever been to a large music festival, you know it is quite easy to miss your favorite act because of reading a schedule that was posted at the front gates wrong. This is a sure-fire plan to know where to be, when you want to be there. Soundset is also heavily blasted on Twitter and became a top trending topic last year.

Mobile marketing isn’t nearly all the hype it gets though. Bloggers go nuts for Soundset and they make it widely known to their readers. Also more conventional writers for publications, newspapers and magazines such as; The City Pages, The Star Tribune, Pitchfork, and more, pay Soundset much attention. It has grown massively from it’s first year at The Metrodome parking lot when it was a more local event, to the following year when they had to move it to Canterbury Park based on it’s national attention. Soundset is an ever-evolving festival that I don’t see dying out anytime within the next decade, and you can thank social media for that.

For more info on Soundset ’11, check out their website, their facebook, and their twitter page.

Atmosphere – The Family Sign

So being a huge midwest based hip-hop fan, I follow the scene pretty closely. Many of you have probably already heard of Atmosphere’s new album set to release April 12th, 2011, so I’m a little late on the subject. They just dropped their first single from the album called “Just for show” on the Current last night, and seeing as the Current is so awesome when it comes to local music and it’s dedicated fans, they’ve got the single online streaming to listen to for the next week. You can listen to that here. Along with the single they’ve release album artwork:

Cover of "The Family Sign"

They also made a press release for the media:

Atmosphere returns with their 7th official studio album and the newest addition to their unparalleled body of work. The Family Sign comes from a place well refined and firmly planted, from a universal perspective. It’s about being okay with losing friends and strengthening your bonds with others, celebrating the person who’s been the most positive in your life, your kids, your homies, leaving the people you need to behind, and bringing the ones you love with you. It’s about your family, your time and the time you have with them. It’s about living and dying. It’s the truth about family, that it comes from loyalty as much as biology. It’s about breaking down your perceptions of family and really appreciating the people who’ve made you who you are and continue doing so.

The Family Sign is Atmosphere’s most personal and intimate album yet; it involves and engages the listener like never before. Slug’s signature voice weaves in and out of Ant’s ASR-born production, Nate Collis’ bluesy guitar riffs and the sound of Erick Anderson’s unmistakable keys giving The Family Sign a fresh, unique edge without sacrificing Atmosphere’s signature sound. Join the Family April 12th, 2011.
